Pulmonary embolism caused by a migrated gunshot projectile.

چکیده
Pulmonary embolism caused by a foreign body is an exceedingly rare event. We report on a 62 year old woman who suffered a gun shot injury to her left knee with concomitant vascular lacerations. The bullet migrated through the venous system into the pulmonary circulation causing a pulmonary embolism. The projectile remained stationary for ten years. Taking into consideration that she is virtually asymptomatic and that regular follow up examinations showed no further migration of the foreign body, we opted for a conservative venue of management.

Bullet embolization to the external iliac artery after gunshot injury to the abdominal aorta: a case report
INTRODUCTION Abdominal vascular trauma is fairly common in modern civilian life and is a highly lethal injury. However, if the projectile is small enough, if its energy is diminished when passing through the tissue and if the arterial system is elastic enough, the entry wound into the artery may close without exsanguination and therefore may not be fatal. A projectile captured may even travel d...

CASE REPORT The projectile was lodged between the apex of the heart and the diaphragm. The patient was treated non-operatively and was discharged home only to return to the emergency department with chest pain and subsequent ide...
متن کاملMissile pulmonary embolus secondary to abdominal gunshot wound
Missile pulmonary emboli are rare sequelae of traumatic entry of projectile missiles-generally bullets or bullet fragments-in which access to the systemic venous circulation is established by the missile, making it possible for the missile to migrate to the pulmonary arteries. In the case introduced here, a 24-year-old male presented to the ER with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. In the early c...
متن کاملGunshot bullet embolus with pellet migration from the left brachiocephalic vein to the right ventricle: a case report
We report the case of a 16 year old male who was the victim of a drive by shooting sustaining the rare but recognised complication of cardiovascular bullet embolism. He was seen as a trauma call in the emergency department and CT scanning revealed 70 shotgun pellets scattered throughout left sided sub-cutaneous tissues of the head and neck, and more significantly a single pellet within the righ...
متن کاملBilateral shotgun pellet pulmonary emboli.
Intravascular migration of bullets and other foreign bodies is a rare but known complication of penetrating trauma. Missile embolization can represent a diagnostic challenge because it may present in various and unexpected ways. We present the case of a 54-year-old female who sustained shotgun pellet emboli to the pulmonary arteries following a left upper extremity gunshot wound and related vas...
